Resort Guide
A guide to Puerto Santiago and what to expect
This small fishing port sits on the rocky west coast of Tenerife, set at walking distance between Los Gigantes and Playa de la Arena. In common with the other two resorts, Puerto Santiago benefits from its far westerly position, and enjoys some of the best weather in The Canaries. The resort is 20 miles north-west of the busier Playa de las Americas and Los Christianos, and transfer from the airport takes approximately one and half hours.
Puerto Santiago is a relaxed and friendly resort, and being where the majority of the area’s Spanish residents are based, it has a more traditional Canarian atmosphere. The town has top, middle and bottom sections, making it feel somewhat sprawling. There is a choice of accommodation on offer including larger all-inclusive hotels with swimming pools, and smaller self-catering apartments. Puerto Santiago is not known for its beaches, but the pretty volcanic beaches of Playa de la Arena and Los Gigantes are within very easy reach.
The resort has a tasty assortment of restaurants, bars and shops. Given the relatively high Spanish population there are ample opportunities to sample real Canarian cuisine, although there are restaurants on offer to suit all tastes. For those who are self-catering, supermarket shopping is probably cheaper in Puerto Santiago than in other nearby resorts. There is a small Fishing Museum in the town, which remembers Puerto Santiago’s maritime roots.
Water sports, scuba diving, and sport fishing are all available at nearby Los Gigantes marina, as well as boat excursions to see local colonies of whales and dolphins. Tour busses run from Puerto Santiago’s hotels to explore the spectacular natural beauty of the area, including the Teidi National Park and the Teno Mountains.
