Area Guide
What to expect in the area of Los Gigantes and things to do
This pretty and peaceful town nestles on Tenerife’s rocky west coat, 20 miles north-west of the busier Playa de las Americas and Los Christianos. Being in the most westerly part of the island, Los Gigantes enjoys one of the best climates in The Canaries. The resort is just south of the famous 500-800m tall Los Gigantes (“The Giants”) cliffs, for which it is named. Transfer from the airport takes approximately one and half hours.
Scenic Los Gigantes has been carefully developed, and has been said to have an exclusive atmosphere. There is a volcanic sand beach, which is clean and suitable for children, and a high-walled marina. Accommodation in the resort mainly consists of unobtrusive low-rise apartment buildings, although there are a couple of larger multi-storey hotels.
The commercial centre holds a variety of restaurants and bars, catering for a range of tastes, from traditional Canarian cuisine, to Mexican and Chinese food. The resort’s bars offer everything from a quiet drink to a lively night out in a karaoke or sports bar. Los Gigantes’ shops are well-worth a browse, with not only fresh local produce on offer, but also gifts and designer clothing.
As well as sipping drinks in a pavement café, or strolling around the marina wall taking in the view, more energetic visitors can take part in water sports, scuba diving and sport fishing. The marina contains quite a few privately owned boats, as well as those which take tourists out to see the 27 species of whales and dolphins, which inhabit the waters around the resort. Slightly further a field, the Teno Mountains and Teidi National Park are within easy reach.
