Resort Guide
A guide to Callao Salvaje and what to expect
This small, relaxing resort is situated on the southern part of Tenerife’s rocky west coast. It is conveniently located within easy access of the island’s main routes, being less than 8 miles north of Playa de las Americas, and only 16 miles from the airport (40-45 minutes by car or taxi).
Peaceful Callao Salvaje was originally a fishing village. It has developed as a holiday resort rather rapidly in recent years, and is still quite a new resort, with building still ongoing. The town is half residential and half holiday resort. The beach area mainly consists of pebbles, and is not really suitable for sunbathing, or for children to play on. Local authorities are planning to create an artificial beach, but at the time of writing there was no definite date set for this.
There are a growing number of hotels, aparthotel and apartment complexes in Callao Salvaje, and ample local amenities including supermarkets, pharmacy, bank and car hire. The resort has a fair choice of bars and restaurants to enjoy, the majority serving good quality food and drink at reasonable prices.
Callao Salvaje is a more restful location, for those who don’t wish to stay in the more action packed larger resorts. The larger and livelier towns of Los Gigantes and Playa de las Americas are, however, only a short journey away. Callao Salvaje tends to be more popular among independent travellers, who plan to hire cars, being a convenient base from which to explore the rest of the island, benefiting from easy access to the motorway.
