We were visiting family over the Christmas period and were able to book 21 days in advance for 4 nights at an excellent price. All we required was an affordable basic clean room, with bathroom seating area and tv. It was centrally located and we then had our own space to return to after visiting family and friends.

Booked this Travelodge (Norwich Central) for a friend who was coming to stay and it was ridiculously cheap! Got a family room for £19, although the room they actually stayed in didnt seem like a family room. It was perfectly adequate though. I think if you book a few weeks in advance with Travelodge there is the best chance for a bargain. This particular one in Norwich was centrally placed on St Stephens street, a short walk from the town centre and a 10 minute walk from the riverside area which houses a few good bars and clubs. I think maybe the staff realised it was only 1 person coming to stay so they changed the family room to a double room but that was still fine for £19. The bus station is also next to the hotel so thats another plus.

Excellent overnight accommodation clean with services for food. Great green area behind motel for kids to run wild for a short time.

I stayed in the the Travelodge at Fourwentways which, to be honest, is a bit of a drive outside Cambridge but an easy one nonetheless. Facilities are standard and service was particualy good at this Travelodge, not something that is always the same across some I have stayed in. Prices were cheap (i booked about 4 months ahead for a business meeting) and there is a little chef on hand should you wish to 'dine out' ;). Easy access to the M11 for London and about a 10 minute drive to the outskirts of Cambridge. Petrol station in the vicinity.
