Destination Guide
A brief account of Canary Islands, places to see and things to do
This Spanish archipelago consists of seven islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, and draws 11 million tourists per year. Although the islands are considered a region of Spain (Spanish is the main language spoken), they are closer to Africa, their nearest neighbour being Morocco. Known as the “land of eternal spring”, these islands are blessed by beautiful warm weather all year round, with hardly a drop of rain and guaranteed sun. The minimum temperature in winter is around 18˚C, with temperatures in summer exceeding 24˚C.
The islands have wonderful black sandy beaches, as they are volcanic in origin, being the only parts of a volcanic mountain range that are not under the sea. Mount Teidi on Tenerife is the highest mountain in Spain, and the third largest volcano on Earth. The Canaries are an area of outstanding natural beauty, and are home to four of Spain’s 13 national parks. There is something on offer for almost all different tastes, from all night parties, to whale and dolphin spotting, from peaceful eco-holidays to wild water sports. Five of the 7 islands are major holiday destinations, the other 2, Hierro and Gomero, are small and undeveloped.
The different islands in the chain all have their own distinctive landscapes and characters. Tenerife (the biggest of the islands) and Gran Canaria are lively and bustling tourist resorts, known for their beaches and water sports during the daytime, as well as their vibrant nightlife. These two islands also have many beautiful natural sights to see, and there are quieter, more relaxed resorts for those who want to “get away from it all”.
Lanzarote is known for its bizarre volcanic landscapes and its extraordinary caves and craters. Fuerteventura has the longest beaches, and is a more relaxed destination for families and couples. La Palma, the smallest of the five major holiday islands, is largely unspoiled and covered in lush green vegetation (it experiences a higher rainfall than the other islands), mountains, cliffs and beaches. It is an ideal places for nature lovers and eco-tourists.
